In my last post, I mentioned that I was going to start using bibliomancy to choose a symbol for each lunation during each new moon. My first pick for this first month was toad.
You have NO IDEA how perfect this is. When I first meditated on my spirit animal, lo these many years ago, toad came up for me. So toad was my first spirit animal and has always shown up for me during times of transition or as a warning of trouble ahead. So this really fits.
Among other things, toad is a creature of both water and earth. So am I. I’m a Capricorn with Cancer rising and a Pisces moon. So toad works for me on that level. Secondly, toad is a harbinger of Spring. When you hear them begin to croak, you know that Spring is on its way.
According to the Woman’s Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects by Barbara Walker, the early French people, Aztecs, Native Americans (which tribe?) and Chinese have all had myths surrounding toad as a symbol of death and rebirth. This is a great time of year to study that particular motif as the leaves and crops are all dying out and being harvested for the last time this year. Toads have also been associated with witchcraft because of the poisons that are secreted from the skin of some species.
To me, the toad is just magick and transformation. So that’s what I’m going to focus on this lunation.
